  • 1965 Pan Generator/Regulator combo specs

I am trying to find the output rating for stock 65 electraglide generator/regulator combo, and whether there is a higher output combo available, as well as its rating, if known. My goal is to add powerlet plug for accessory power. and need to know this for load calculations. Any help appreciated.

This is a pain. I thought I posted a response but don't see it. So will try again.

First - if you have a true stock '65 Pan generator, I don't know that I would do anything with it.

I would remove it an fit another generator that will serve your purposes. Store that original for when you resell or have the bike judged. The model 65 generator on the '65 is a one year generator. In 66 they changed the pole positions so + and - are opposite after 65. Those generators are model 65A designation.

So be careful with that generator if it says model 65 (not 65A) and set it aside.

Same with the voltage regulator it's not integrated it's a separate unit mounted on the front end of the battery. It's not 1 year but it is rare.

You should find yours at the location mentioned if its stock and it should be delco as well. Pull it off or just disconnect it and leave it there for looks as you modify is my best suggestion. Those regulators a very $$ and hard to find these days.

That said. The only way I know to get total info on the min/max output for the generator would be to find the Delco spec sheet on it, which I don't have. Would be cool if someone does if they would post an image. Looking in the factory repair manual section 5E. It says that at 2000 RPM/40MPH the output of the 12 volt generator should be 10 amps or higher. 6 volt should be 15 amps or higher. That's all i see in the Harley docs that I have.

I can say that my father was running the the '65 I have before me. When he owned it it was a 70's dresser. Big light bar, all kind of extra lights, Fiamm horns, extra running lights, etc. He was running the stock electrics. Never had a problem. He even had a Radio Caddy accessory.

So I think you should be fine with stock, but if you are wanting to connect up a bunch of toasters. AKA heated gloves, riding suit, etc you may need to make a change.

Any way that's my humble opinion. Hope it helps.

When I started working on bikes seems like 1 in 10 posts were backwards and I got in the habit of allways checking before hooking up. Never knew that 65 was the reason. I still make certain what is stamped at the post but haven't seen the other in many many years. I asume that 65A parts fit the 65 housing just need to swap inside wires and insulators. Now I know I need to find a 65 gen. for my 65.

Yes, if you check in the 1959-1969 HD Service Manual (Electra Glide) PN99482-69 they have a photo on page 5E-3 that shows the difference/change.

Take the good guts from an A and switch the hookups, and put them in the '65 case?

Yep, Really the only change is how the brushes are wired, then the stamping on the case of course. The brushes, fields, armature are the same AFAIN at least for the early shovels vs. the model 65 in the first year eglide and the 64/12v tri car?

Bottom line though and what I was recommending is that if you have a '65 with the original model 65 generator and Delco regulator don't be messing with that as it's a valuable piece and they are hard to come buy. Take them off and replace with any generator/regulator of choice that gets you the output you want for runnning warm suits, gloves, accessories if you are worried that the output of the stock generator won't be ample. Set those rare parts asisde and keep them for the show, judging, or when you decide to sell the bike. Not to mention that 1 year delco starter....
