I can see in the prototype pictures that the steering damper lever does not have the angle reinforcement in the lower corner. Yet I've seen many production 1936 knuckleheads that have the reinforcement. Does anyone know when the reinforcement came into effect. I have a very early 1936 and was wondering if mine should or should not have the reinforcement. I was thinking that that it may be like the VL style front fender and is only found on the prototype ohv and not on any productions models. All comments appreciated.

As you know that lever is a prototype item. The bike in that photo is a 1935. The lever is one of the many things featured in those photos that changed or did not make it into full production. The tall lever was only on a few of the very early machines. These did have the reinforcing spot welded onto the bracket. I have only seen a couple originals myself. I borrowed one and used it to make a batch of them many years ago. Mine did not have the reinforcement attached but it was included with it. You may have bought one from me.
As noted in the 1937 parts book the '36 should be using the 2778-36 steering dampener lever that was used on most all spring forks through 1957. Some 45" models had a different lever. It can be confusing when, if you look at the 1936 parts book it shows both levers. One as the lever by itself and the other as part of the steering dampener assembly.

Hi Chris, Thanks for your response. I hope all is well with you! So, if I understood correctly, your saying that all of the production 1936 ohv had the reinforcement at the bottom? I didn't know that you had made them. These are just a couple of homemade brews that I'm making for my self.
I haven't made the tin covers in many years and have none left. However, I still have the dies and have been planning to make another run. When that will happen, I'm not real sure.
