I recently purchased a replica rear view mirror at Rhinebeck for my '47 FL - looks like a V-twin part. Very disappointed (sorry Ted - no disrespect intended) that I can only see my shoulder when it's properly mounted to my newly-painted handlebar.
I'm told that there are some repro early pickup truck mirrors out there with offset ball-swivel locations (on the back of the mirror). I've been searching the antique truck sites and have viewed what seems like thousands of mirrors, but have been unsucessful thus far.
Seems like I have several options; find the correct mirror (still looking), bend the stem of the repro mirror that I have, fabricate a new stem, use a longer stem military repro and parkarize it black, or use the Indian 741 military repros offered by Advanced Welding, Inc. (I like these - see AMCA Fall 2010 Magazine page 62).
I would be very interested in finding the black mirrors with the offset ball-swivel. That solves the problem and allows me to keep the short stem mirror that I have, and I can continue my search for a good OEM mirror. If anyone knows where these offset repros can be located, please let me know.
Also, if anyhone knows where an OEM mirror might be found, that would be the most desireable solution (and it will keep all you purists off my back).
Finally - any and all other suggestions would be appreciated before I break out the torches, hammers and parkerizing pans.
