  • Trying to identify a transmission that came out of a knuck

The only makings I can find on the case are the numbers 121 – 35 on the underside with a 1 stamped about 1” above that. On the boss where the adjusting bolt goes there is a T and what looks like an F on a slant stamped about half way up. There is no vent in the case and no casting in the area where the vent is located on other cases.

      Yes it is.

I can't find any other markings on it such as the code that looks like a stamped tab that is held on with rivets that is cast into the case.
Trying to determine what year it might be.

Guess no one want to take a stab at it.

            Thanks Chris,

I don't have a good enough camera and have been trying to get someone to take some for me.

Any suggestions for other areas to shoot on the case other than where the vent would be on most transmissions that would help to identify it?

If it has no vent hole in the case, it does have the 5th mount on the bottom, and no date code it is a late 1937-1938 case. If it has no 5th mount it is a 1936-early 1937.

J, as indicated above it sounds like you have a late-1937 to early-1938 case. The stamped tab you referred to which is absent from your case is sometimes called a casting date code and the earliest example I have of that type of date code on your type of Big Twin trans case is F8 (June 1938) so your case may be earlier than that.

Regarding the 1 which is indented above casting number 121-35, I can't explain that and on some cases you'll find an indented 2, sometimes an indented 2E and sometimes an indented 1E. The T and the F near the adjusting bolt hole are also a mystery to me. Eric

Thanks Chris a SBT. I am still trying to get some pics of it.

I also have the 36 / 37 2 piece brazed double slotted Clutch arm but no early kicker cover.

You need to get rid of those parts as soon as possible as the are protected by a Gypsy Curse. Send them to me and I will dispose of them properly.

                      Chris,

I don't need to mess around with that dreaded Gypsy Curse thingy, I so afraid of it. So PLEASE, send me the correct kicker cover with all the parts installed and the correct shift top so I can put it all together. Then I can take it out to the deepest part of the ocean and drop it overboard where it will not be able to harm anyone ever again. It wont do any good to drop it in the ocean without all of the parts and pieces installed. PLEASE SEND ASAP!

Don't even think of doing that. It will kill all life in our oceans. Only I and and Mrs Ganush know how to handle this properly. Here is a picture of Mrs. Ganush

                          Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found a way around it.

If I put it together and take it to the gulf and chant an ancient Monisosian incantation then toss it in, it will override the Gypsy curse and perhaps make BP get their act together.

Or just put it back on the shelf in the back room.

I was of the oppinion that 1938 was the first year of the cast plate on the trans cases.

                            Speeding Big Twin
                            I also have a 1938 trans with F-8.
Mine is a 3 speed only trans.

I dont think Chris has the correct cantations or spell bocks to handle the hex on these items. Strong...very strong!!

                            As it would happen...I do.
I think the first step to be taken is, send it far from the shores of the US to aleviate the good, god fearing people of any further disruption to their lives.
I will clens them, and love them and pat them and... oopps where was I.

You are correct. But early 1938's didn't have the date code. You have an F 8 which is June 1938. F 8 is also the earliest date code I have seen. I am sure there were early '38's with cases cast before that.
