I understand that. I know it was a 1943 model, see the title of the original post. He was saying "Check out the date" as if there is something special about that date.

            Sicily

            9 July to 17 August 1943

On the night of 9-10 July 1943, an Allied armada of 2,590 vessels launched one of the largest combined operations of World War II— the invasion of Sicily. Over the next thirty-eight days, half a million Allied soldiers, sailors, and airmen grappled with their German and Italian counterparts for control of this rocky outwork of Hitler's "Fortress Europe." When the struggle was over, Sicily became the first piece of the Axis homeland to fall to Allied forces during World War II. More important, it served as both a base for the invasion of Italy and as a training ground for many of the officers and enlisted men who eleven months later landed on the beaches of Normandy.

On that day-- July 17, 1943, my Dad's B-17 bombing mission to Hannover was scrubbed due to hydraulic problems, and his plane returned to base. He did, however, go on the next mission to Hannover on 26 Julio, 1943. He was shot down and ditched in the North Sea, and the crew was rescrued 14 hours later.

My sentiments exactly. Nothing special happened that day to tie in with this person buying a new bike. Except maybe he had been waiting a long time for it to be delivered.

I didn't mean to start such a controversy! I misread the date as 7-19 which just happened to be the same date on which I read it. Amazing, the amount of conversation that can arise from such an insignificant detail.
