  • Fuel reserve

I have a fuel shut off rod in my 47 knuckle, 3 1/2 gallon tanks, that only gives me 4-5 miles of reserve fuel. The rod I have has a hole near the bottom of the rod, and 2 holes about half way up the rod. I understand that there is a rod for 45" tanks that has the 2 holes much farther down on the rod, and if used in 3 1/2 gallon tanks gives even less reserve.
Some one sent me a picture of the 2 different rods a while ago. I definitely have the one with the holes higher up on the rod.
Can someone explain to me how the reserve system works. (why 1 hole at the bottom, why 2 holes higher up on the rod?) I have looked at it and it looks to me that even if I don't pull the rod up, all the fuel is going thru the valve, anyway. I don't understand how the valve gives additional fuel.

It does shut off the fuel when I turn it closed. Is there some other "adjustment" that I am not doing?

    Thanks,
    Paul
