  • Mirror for springer

    Dear all,

    How are you all?

I attached here a picture of the mirror I have in my springer. It is a HD part (Harley Davidson stamped in the stem) buy I think this type of mirror is NOT contemporary to 1947. Do somebody know when did this mirror appeared for the first time?

The other thing I thought is that looking the old pictures in my books, mirrors in HDs during the 40s were quite rare. Only in the 50s seemed this useful accessories to become more popular. Do you agree on this or is the statement wrong?

Many thanks and kind regards to all!

    Chris

Your mirror is a part number 91873-47 and is correct for a 1947.

Great, Chris! And what's about that "shorty" other one with short stem and the stem connected to the clamp by a screw IN the stem below? This is the type of mirror I see more often in springers...

Was coexisting with mine? Both correct accessories for HD back in 47?

      Kind regards,

      Chris.

Like an Italian Formula 1 driver said: "Mirrors! I only care about what's in front of me, not what's behind me". That is a good observation Chris. You don't generally see mirrors on 40's and older vintage motorcycles. I think America was a less hectic place in those days. The interstate highway system, and suburbia were a post war phenomenon that made America a much busier and dangerous place to ride a motorcycle.

Ha! I got the point and fully agree, Exeric...

Anyway we would need to set our "2009 contaminated brains" to those young years to understand it better!

However, slowing down to make a left turn, with your BT growling between legs, maybe a winter cap on and the bad chance of a second HD overtaking you at the very moment could have been a possible pictures also in those days!

Far away from being an expert, I think that cars (I know: slower in average and therefore more interested about it) implemented mirrors quite earlier than motorcycles...

          Kind regards,

          Chris.

Both were correct in 1947. The black one was the cheap one on the chrome was more expensive.
