    Here is a set of 1948 cases on ebay that are 48FL9089 and he claims they are a match set with an early left and a later right. That is the highest serial number I have seen on an early style 48 case and it is OEM. Auction number 120644039575.

        That's probably because H-D didn't always do things in a sensible manner, but used whatever parts came to hand at any given moment. Not improbable for earlier cases to be set aside, misplaced, or maybe repaired that later were assembled into a motor.

        When I asked Buchta why they didn't do some things more logically (to us), he replied: "Because I wasn't told to do it that way, that's why."
