  • 47 Knuckle Frame Welds

I have a late 47 Knuckle frame and it has welded and brazed parts on it.
Can anyone tell me what is suppose to be welded and brazed. I understand that around 45 they started to use both and in 48 they used just electric welds.

basicly everything between the neck and axle plates are welded. The neck and axle plates are brazed.

I think that upon close inspection you will find that nearly all of the frame elements were first arc-tacked into place before the entire frame was then speltered. And then oven-tempering of the entire assembly followed.

If I remember right without a copy handy, Palmer's great reference cited '49 as the first totally electrically welded BT frame.

I have an original late 47 EL frame that I know has not been touched. There is evidence of arc welding and brazing where paint has flaked off or worn off. In some cases, the fitting appears to be welded in place for a portion of the diameter and then brazed as somebody mentioned.

I'm not familiar with the term "speltered" and Websters said spelter is a zinc ingot. If that is a local term for brazed, then I would tend to agree. The forged frame fittings in several locations appear to be welded and brazed in place.

If you have specific joints you would like me to confirm, send me a picture or tell me the joint and I'll tell you what is on my frame. My SN is in the 14000 range so it is a very late EL.

That frame should bear a strong resemblance to a Panhead.

I first learned the term "speltered" from a George Yarocki article in the AMCA magazine years ago.
Perhaps it should only be applied to Indian frames?

Just like the term "brazed" can mean a flame weld as well as a low-temp brass union, it is possible that modern convention has change meanings over time.
