wow, 100 points! beautiful bike

That is a stunner. The challenge with perfection is the initial conversion from show bike to rider…these should be ridden and enjoyed. My 1945 essential use EL (purchased before sky-rocketing prices) had its 800 mile trip this Spring at the Oregon AMCA ride. What do you think, will the eBay bike get ridden?

I see a 1/4 point deduction. The rocker nuts should be chromed, not Parkerized. So it is only a 99 3/4 point bike. a 5 minute fix. :-) 16658.jpg 16742 1945 OHV.jpg

The 1945 EL on the cover of Bruce Palmer's books has chromed rocker nuts thanks to Bruce's research and advice when we were restoring the bike. The bike received 100 points at Oley.

If both bikes mentioned received 100 points, that would suggest an oversight/error in either the judging or the judging criteria. So, like everything else, the system isn't perfect.
Or maybe they switched to chromed rocker nuts after V-J Day...

The bike should have chrome rocker nuts. I've never seen a factory photo showing a war era bike with anything other than Gray tank emblems, but the Blue and Black emblems were an accessory, so they would be considered acceptable on a restoration. Nice bike, big money...

When I first did my 44UL w/sidecar back in the late '70s all the info available at the time (mostly period photos) showed a few chrome bits and the documentation I could find showed the factory using up small chrome items from inventory on civilian bikes such as the speedo bezel, grip sleeves, headlight bezel, and gas caps. I also remember purchasing war surplus parts and getting the bonus of them being factory chrome painted over in OD green. When stripped they were new chrome underneath so obviously had been in inventory before full war production was underway. I did the bike as a civilian model due to it being a UL and not a U.

Do AMCA judges look at things such as the rear brake operating lever (left side)? Would there be a deduction if it was not installed correctly?


Did AMCA judges look at the BNs? If not, why not? If so, what did they say about them?
Notice the 4 in the R-H BN has an open top and a serif across the base. But in the year portion of a 1945 Knuckle BN I’d expect the 4 to have an open back and no serif.

Also compare the 1s. In the left BN they look consistent with factory stamping but in the R-H BN they do not.

As I said in May, I’d like a very clear close-up of the left BN.

Judges don’t check belly numbers but these are definitely not a factory matched set. Also oil return and vent are crossed as well as the nuts on all the lines should be parkerized. The kicker pedal should be plastic but I’m not sure if the one on it is acceptable as an accessory. Still a nice bike and very close but makes you wonder about the current judging system.

I think the earlier 45s had the WPB metal spools, and the later 45s had the plastic block pedal.
