    G;Day I have a 46 EL & I am trying to date the barrels.Rear 28-7 5 fin.Front16-6 with a J on its side.5 fin.Can some body make sense of these casting marks.

    The letters (J) etc, are the month starting with A=Jan although the letter "I" was often not used, the first number is day of the month, the second is the year. Your other barrel should have a letter on it as well.

      Sometimes the cassting cate is unreadable due casting sand or a flaw.

            Your front was made on Sept 16 1946 and the rear was made on the 28 of some month in 1947. On the rear there should be a letter somewhere to indicate the month - might be around the corner.
