None of the timer straps in Palmer's books are black on civilian bikes.
But were they low grade stainless & not nickel plated?

3232-18 bolts secure the tanks to the top of the frame on all 1918-1936 bikes except 1936ohv, & will fit back to 1909.

              4 straps,
top is stainless aftermarket..no pull on magnet.
next is black...blued spring steel & then either parkerized or painted black.strong pull on magnet [home made?]
next is silver original..left side was rubbed on with cleaner, right is original patina..light pull on magnet
bottom is one I made 40 years ago out of low grade stainless & sat in a drawer..it has a similar pull on magnet as the silver OEM
What I call low grade stainless is 304 stainless & contains iron,to be malleable/workable
