Early Knuckle Coils - Repair or Replace

[40 Nuck]

I have a correct OEM coil that is not working properly and was wondering if there is anyone that knows more than I about the potential for these to be repaired/rebuilt. As I understand it some may be repaired, but there may be instances when they are not repairable. I don't trust myself, especially wanting a dependable solution, so am looking for someone who can assess/repair my coil (in less than 6 months ... ). If my coil is not worth repairing, is the ONLY option besides hunting up OEM, a V-Twin notoriously piece of c*%p? No one makes a dependable repop coil?

If this is the case, am I really relegated to buying old OEM at high prices and testing them until I get one that's repairable or works?

1940 EL (civilian, no radio). I guess my question to those with more knowledge than I should be. If you had a 1940 EL that was missing a correct coil, how would you go about getting one that was correct AND dependable in today's ebay/swap meet/online vendor world?

Rat at Harbor Vintage was doing them and last time I heard it ran about $80. Not sure if is still doing it as he is trying to sell the business but worth a phone call.

I know that Chris. OP didn't mention knuck or pan.

No worries Len, Your help is always appreciated.
So just take the brackets off the dead Knuckle coil and rivet it on the good Pan coil..
Who cares if it is Pan or Knuckle. If it is good, use it. It's better than any aftermarket junk.

Len, I have shipped my two coils to Harbor Vintage to see what they can do with them. If I have no luck, I may reach out to you on the Pan coil and consider riveting on the brackets as Robbie Knight suggests. Thanks all.

Hi,

I'm new member #28848 in Sweden, but have been into Harley Flatheads since the 90ths.

Have the same issue with repop coils for my 1940 BTSV, and planning on having an original coil rewound the coming winter.

Has anyone tried quality coils such as Dynatek instead of the cheaper ones? Would be interesting to hear if a good quality coil could be fitted inside the original case?
