Fitting handlebars

I have a pair of repop handlebars to fit to my '47 - do I need to jack the bike up to get the weight off the front wheel to fit them?
I have a reprint of the factory manual but there's nothing in there to cover removal and refit of the bars , just the forks.

Yes, you usually need to remove some frontend weight so you can move the front end around to put on the nut.
