  • open exhaust

This has probably been covered but I cant find it.

Any issues with carb performance, stock FL, stock linkert 74, with running open unbaffled exhaust. In this case 2 into 2 relatively short exhaust. Or do linkerts need the back pressure of a muffler or baffle? thnx

    Poorbiker!

Linkerts are the most forgiving carburetor ever made.

The first diagnostic for any tuning complaint is to test for vacuum leaks: http://virtualindian.org/11techleaktest.html

Open exhausts are a problem for the motor, not the carb.

      thnx Cotten,
Poor wording though most of you know what I meant. Stock FL and open exhaust, any performance concerns. Everything being equall, no vaccuum leaks, starts easy, throttle up good, throttle under load, at speed good. Between gears, holding steady throttle at speed, seems sluggish, like when in to high a gear when at low speed. I believe it could be overrich condition though high speed needle is at less than 3/4 turn out. I will admit that I have not looked at the high speed jet, have no idea if it is stock, replaced or drilled out. Intend on looking this weekend. Really runs strong while accelerating. Also, I cant use the choke for nothin, have to start with no choke on or it floods. Cold start, ign off, throttle wide open, couple kicks, then ign on, throttle closed, one to two kicks, every time. Hot starts, ign on and two-three kicks. I am running a magneto. Would have already looked at high speed jet but have been havin to much fun riding it after 5 months work. I developed a nasty rear exhaust tin oil leak. Over tightened rocker cup cover screws and split gasket, no sealer, someone said 3m scotch weld sealant works great with gasket material, like on rocker tins. Good time to seal up tins correctly and look at carb closer..

If a carb *seems* to run rich even after adjustment, it can be a float that doesn't float, but far more often it must be set rich to accomodate a vacuum leak.

Please test your manifold while the carb is off...
