Mick, here's 2 pages of my notes from when i was figuring out the order of assembly:

Inlet Pushrod Parts Stack Order of Assembly; Top to Bottom*

    1. Pushrod spring cover end (“Top hat”) 143-20

    2. Leather washer 145-17

    3. Pushrod spring cover washer (21/32 x 5/16) 144-20

    4. Pushrod spring 140-17

    5. Pushrod spring washer, steel (0226)**

*Description of parts is factory parts book nomenclature
**The parts book calling for the 0226 (standard flat) washer doesn’t make sense. 0226 dimensions are 5/8 x 3/8 x 3/64. I inquired with other guys more knowledgeable than me 0226 and the unanimous answer was that this washer was a special washer made of spring steel, slightly concave in shape; dimensions 11/16 x 7/16. No explanation could be given for why the factory parts book lists 0226 to be fitted.

    1. That leather washer is about 9/16 of an inch in dia with a 1/4 of an inch hole through it and about 3/32 of an inch thick.
    2. Just be careful that you don't make the outside diameter of the washer too big as the top hat washer that locates the pushrod in its retaining nut has to be able to move to keep everything in line.
    3. The bore of the nut is 5/8 of an inch and the tendency is to make the washer to fit that bore size and if you do you introduce a bind that you don't want.
    4. Coming down from the top you'll have:
    1. The top hat pushrod guide washer
    2. The leather washer
    3. A flat washer, 21/32 dia with a 5/16 hole
    4. The spring
    5. and finally the spring seating washer, that is slightly concave, 11/16 in dia with a 7/16 hole
