  • Harley J compression relief

Hello, I am missing some compression relief components for my 1916 J motor I am attempting to restore. I attached the only photo I could find online from a twin cam of a similar “plate” or lever I seem to be missing.

any photos or information on where to obtain these parts is appreciated

I can help with the bits you need and when assembling don't forget the little spring that goes down the hole where your finger is pointing.
E mail me p.j.thomson@actrix.co.nz if you can't get the bits closer to home

Attached are a couple of photos from my 1915 motor - maybe this will help.

Thanks for the photos. I am missing quite a few parts for the compression release it seems.

If the second photo in your original post is your motor, you are only missing two parts. I see the spring in that photo. So, you need the plate that lifts the exhaust valves and the rod that lifts the plate and protrudes through the engine case to connect to the external linkage.

There is a small coil spring that goes down the relief stud hole and tensions the relief stud outwards against the bushing in the outer timing cover.
When its all assembled and before you put the operating lever on you should be able to put finger pressure on the end of the stud and it will move inwards slightly and then spring back out again when pressure is released. Roughly an 1/8 on an inch in and out movement.

Yes that’s my motor, thank you for the info. I couldn’t seem to find even a photograph of that plate before posting. The rod that lifts the plate is also a mystery to me.

Here's a picture of the parts under discussion and if you look closely at the relief stud you will observe a drilling in its base.
Into this hole goes a coil spring of about DSCF4569.JPG 3/16 in diameter and is long enough so that it protrudes about a 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch out the bottom and thus tensions the relief stud in its correct operating position. Without dismantling one of my bikes I can't give you exact measurement of this small coil spring but its seems a lot of people are not aware of its existance.

Functions here frustrate the hell out of me when after carefully typing in all the text and adding the picture last it goes and splits the text up and adds it where it see fit. WHY?

Agreed, Tommo! on the frustration that is! Make sure you have the cursor at the end of your text b4 you upload your pictures. i'm reasonably certain this is why you're experiencing the split.

Isn't there also a fiber washer (536-11) that fits around the stud? That is, 536-11 fits against the shoulder of the stud and the inside of aluminum gear cover?

Duffey, how do you get a pic of a page from the parts book on to a post you make on the forum?
