replacing springs in a 1929 springer.in steve sloocumber book says 17 5/8 long and 9 /316 short.that is too long?have bottom one crushed and top still 2 in from tops ticking out.what is correct length on springs? thanks

i figured it out.took bottom rockers off giving me extra length .put spring caps on then bottom rockers.
