  • 27 JD Clutch Assembly

I am looking for help assembling the clutch on my 27 JD project. The clutch came in a box of parts and I have no reference for the order of assembly and I don’t know if I have all the needed pieces. I have looked on the Yahoo Group site, here, other forums, but cannot find a diagram showing the order of assembly.

I posted pics of wat I am working with. 4B96C7AB-A20C-4885-99A3-E0F40AA1A9B7.jpg9D26E7D6-B1EC-49C4-AD17-F4A5D8DA5550.jpgF636CA66-BD1A-48E4-AECF-A13F159E90AD.jpg5505A1B6-CB3F-47CC-85DB-08E46AA6A079.jpgE7F06C65-00C2-41EE-AE75-3F0D20C96AFD.jpg

    1. Where does the thrust washer go? It would seem on one side or the other of the basket.
    2. Where does the take up spring go? Which way does it face?
    3. What is the item I am holding in my hand? Is is part of this assembly? If yes, where?
    4. After the clutch disc spring plate goes on, is there a washer between it and the nut that secures it on the shaft?
    5. Is there a flat washer between the actuating plate washer / keeper and the clutch rod nut?
    6. Am I missing any parts (assuming my clutch disc spring plate is complete)?

Sorry if I am being confusing, I am not sure if I am asking for the right information. I am just trying to figure this pile of parts out. Thanks for you help.

Bob, I’ll try to answer some of your questions, but I am going by memory and looking at the ’27 parts book and ’27 Rider’s Handbook, so I can stand corrected wherever need be.

    1. If I recall correctly, the face of the main drive gear 2296-25 needs to extend beyond the main shaft nut 2275-19, the washer I believe you refer to “roller bearing washer” is 2500-19 or also listed in factory parts book as 2499-19 “set of roller bearing washers.” This washer goes against the protruding surface of the main drive gear, and the caged roller bearings inside race of “clutch hub shell and sprocket” go against this thrust washer. Proper thickness of this thrust washer is necessary for the clutch hub to not bind against the washer and the face of main drive gear.

    2. The large end of the “clutch take up spring” 2468-19 goes against the 2505-19 “actuating plate” and the small end of spring goes around “clutch lock nut” 2275-19. That nut is a special one, the points of the hex are relieved so the small end of the spring does not hang up on the hex points.
    3. I do not recognize the part you are holding in your hand…

    4. The washer is a special one; 2278-19 “main shaft lock washer” has (if I recall correctly) a tab that projects into the keyway slot of “2489-19” and tabs that fold up against the “clutch lock nut” 2275-19. I do not know of anyone who makes this special lock washer, i got lucky and found ONE on ebay and had to make one up for another clutch I set up. If you know of anyone who has these available, please let me know!

    5. I believe the washer you are asking about is “pull rod lock washer” 2466-15, this washer has flats 180’ across from each other and slips over the flats on 2445-26 “clutch pull rod (12-9/16” long)”

    6. I don’t see anything you might be missing, but I would rely on what other members say.

    7. I reserve the right to be wrong about any of what I’ve tried to describe, so anyone who knows better, I hope will share. I must also add page 16 of the ’27 Rider’s Handbook shows the order of assembly of the clutch and shows the small end clutch take up spring goes against actuating plate. While this may be correct (factory pics not always correct in my experience) this does not make sense to me because if fitted that way, the spring will tend to “walk” around the assembly, and the actuating plate has a convex center portion the large end of spring fits around and the small end of spring rotates freely around the special “clutch lock nut” that has its 6 points relieved which makes sense to me to not foul on the spring.

    8. Do you have a copy of the factory ’27 Riders Handbook and Parts Book? Along with asking questions, my study of these books was invaluable.

    9. Hope this helps and I have not given incorrect information creating confusion or misunderstanding, but should at the least be in the ballpark to assist your efforts going forward…..

Thank you, Steve. Your input is very helpful and much appreciated. I am grateful for all the pictures and posts you put up on this forum and the Yahoo group site.

It looks like I am missing the main shaft lock washer. How did you make the one for your other transmission? Did you use another Harley transmission lock washer as a starting point?

I have the parts book and have mostly been using it, AMCA, CAIMAG and Yahoo forums, your information and the Yahoo group documents for reference. Is there a year 1927 Rider's Handbook? I have seen 1925, 1926 and 1929 books but not a 1927 book. I saw a post where someone said there is a supplement to the handbook that covers the 1927 twins?

Bob, the '26 copyright Rider's Handbook is for '27 models, if you look at the foldout lubrication chart in the back of the book, you'll see the timer has the flat top cover '27 year only.

i've attached a tracing i made of the nos 2278-19 lock washer before i installed it; the i.d. is 13/16" the o.d. is 1-1/4" the 3 large tabs are 3/16" high x 3/8" wide. you'll note in my tracing a "notch" on the i.d., this notch is actually the 4th small tab that turns into the key way slot of 2489-19 "drive disc", this small tab is bent 90' from the factory, the other 3 large tabs are flat and bent up against the sides of the special nut after after its tightened. As i mentioned before, if you find a source for the 2278-19 do let me know as i'd like a couple for spares should the need ever arise to remove my clutch assembly!

p.s. atop the tracing you'll see a used 2278-19; the small tab is broken off, but at least it's a sample of the washer. yes, i used this sample when i made the other washer, not my best work as i made it from scratch by hand, but it got the job done. i wonder what Jon Neuman or Rob Nussbaum are using, they may be the people to ask.....
