’23 J-Series Transmission

Afternoon all, I am talking with a seller about the picture ’23 J transmission. Obviously the clutch has been modified (not sure if J-Series plus I am not very knowledgeable on J's) and funky shift lever (maybe farm or stationary application?). What is throwing me is the kicker cover side. Does this look correct? Has something been added? What’s missing?

The only thing missing on the kicker side is the kicker arm it self. That box had a hard life. Get ready to replace everything down to the clutch arm bushing. Bob L

Thanks Bob and yea she's seen a hard life. I didn't see any apparent case cracks or repairs. When there is a crack, do these cases typically crack in a certain area? Something to look for when I put my eyes on it and pop the top. William

When they are cracked, it's usually through the main drive gear bearing area but that's not very common.
IMO, your decision to buy any J transmission should depend about 80% on the condition of the gears inside including the kicker gears.
It has a few missing parts on the outside but nothing that hard to find.
Pull the top and side covers and look at the condition of the parts that are expensive and difficult to get.

Thanks for the great points Mark. I assume sliding gear operation like my VL trans (VL's are the predecessor). And if a reverse unit, would it have a 4 gear cluster on the countershaft like the VL?

Yes, sliding gear and some or all of the same actual components depending on the year of the VL.
No 3+R on a JD except for a period aftermarket option. If the gears are shot, then it's a $200 bill max for what's there.
