1919 motor

Found this in an abandoned car trunk. Purchased it for 40.00$. How would I get a Michigan title for this motor???

Michigan will not issue titles for engines, only complete vehicles.

Paultrehberg, you may be able to do a work around. Get a title in a state that does not require an inspection, then take a bill of sale and that title to your dmv or dep of licensing (however Michigan does it) an apply for a title, assuming Michigan does not require an inspection and will title with only one vin (engine) rather than engine and frame numbers. There are several states that are relatively easy to obtain titles of pre 1950 era vehicles. You may need to do some research and checking around. A friend or relative in an easy title state is a boon.

A sideview photo of that motor would give us a much better idea of what you have (preferably the cam cover side). J era motors have many small variations.

Call the DMV and ask how to do a lost title/abandon property. Every state has something to deal with this and no you don't have to have a complete motorcycle.

If it is a motorcycle engine that's titled by the engine number you should be able to title it In Michigan without to much trouble. The Secretary of State will have forms for you to fill out. You will need to get an appraisal showing the motorcycles present value at less than $2500. A lot of bike shops are licensed to do this. You will also have to have the police inspect the numbers and fill out forms the Secretary of State gives you. Having the parts to assemble the motorcycle with the engine while your getting the appraisal and inspection might help. After all the forms are filled out take the paper work back, pay the taxes on the appraised value and wait for the title in the mail.

Thanks for posting the sideview pic, Paul. Looks like a nice, correct, and complete 1919 motor. '19 was the last year for that type of cylinder, and they can be a bit tough to find; yours look good. However, I wonder about that steel plug between the gear cover, and gear housing?

I hate pointing out bad news, Paul, but your magneto base, and rear motor mount have been removed. Both can be replaced, but there would be some picky fabrication, and welding to do.
