  • JD Chain Size

I am needing both a primary and secondary chain for my 26 JD. My question is what size chain and how many links. My best guess, is a 530 chain but the amount of links I am not too sure.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Re: JD Chain Size

    Hello MassHarley.

This is a question that I have/had for my 20J. If you look at various J &JD vendors websites you will see that they seem to list 530 as the size up to 1929.

As for length I have bought some chain that is a bit too long and I will adjust its length to suit my needs.

If you want to be more scientific there are plenty of online chain length calculators. You enter the chain type, sprocket sizes, distances between the sprocket centres and it will give you a theoretical length. I did this to get an idea for mine but then bought standard length chain that was a bit longer so I can cut it down to suit my needs.

    Hope this helps.

      Thank John!

Do you happen to remember how many link chain you bought? I have the ability to shorten the chain just don't want to buy one that is too short.

I just used a piece of rope to get a rough length and then asked for that length of chain 6" longer. I cut the chain, exact length, while it was wrapped around the sprockets. Depending on the sprocket sizes, sometimes you need to add an offset link (half link) to get the perfect length.

running stock gearing engine to clutch and counter shaft to rear sprocket. i bought a 110 link nickle plated Diamond chain for my rear, cut it to length and had 6 or 8 or 10 links left over. i bought a 100 link DID for primary and cut it to length, had maybe 15-20 links left over. 530 both front and rear.
