leather gaskets for tank caps

the leather gaskets i have for my tank caps are not good. they fall off and are getting larger and i have not even used them yet !

Who out there makes good leather gaskets for JD tank caps ?

Bill have you used these gaskets, do they retain their shape with use and fit tight ?

I have not used these. I am not to that point in my 'rustoration.'

i can't remember for sure where my leather washers came from..... seems i bought my caps from Comp.D and they came with the washers, but maybe the washers CD sells are not same as ones that came on caps. i don't know, would appreciate hearing more.

Make your own simple die with a lathe.
(I often must cut gaskets that never existed.)

if i could justify the expense of the tools to make 3 or 6 gaskets, i'd buy the punches in a heart beat. as it is, it's cheaper for me to find who makes good ones

Tom, since you've taken the time and gone to the expense of making up the dies, if you have dies to make cap gaskets for 27 era caps, i would buy a couple sets !!

But I am focused only upon carbs and manifolds (and even then I only retail parts with my services).
I doubt I've ever held a J cap in my hand!

I also do what Tom does and I am building quite a collection of specialty gasket dies. If you use a press, and buck the die on the cross grain of a wood block, you don't need to heat treat the die.

Well Eric,

I found wood with any grain at all tended to produce a "furry" gasket; Masonite was better, and ABS wasn't bad.
But now I use acrylic sheets, salvaged from video arcade game windows. Even ordinary steel holds up well, and easily sharpened, but my best luck is with something already hardened, like wrist pins and such. I don't know what the large die in my photo originated as, but it was tough to cut even with carbide, as was the thin die in the foreground, which must have been some sort of thrustwasher. How I miss the garbage before the Recession, and can't wait for it to end!

And as I noted in the S&S Vintage discussion, I do not produce a sharp point on my cutting edges; Instead they have a tiny flat that shears as it presses into the plastic, and survives much longer.

My 60-ton screwpress allows me to crank them out at a fraction of the time it takes for a hydraulic.
