  • Need help to identify this brake drum

Hi. I dont play with the early bikes and can not identify this Harley brake drum.
Was it used in the 20's? and if so for how long and what model?

      Hi Chris.
The hub has 18 holes on the brake side and the 9 holes in the other flange look like they share a set of spokes.
      36 spokes.
      Whats the verdict.
      Regards Steve

I have serious doubt's that that is a Harley hub.
All 1928 and 1929 HD single and twin front brake hubs were 40 spoke and I'm pretty sure HD never went back to 36 spoke hubs during the 1930's
I'll photograph 28/29 hubs tomorrow and put them up for you all to see.

This drum came in a batch of Harley parts that I bought a few years ago and the guy had said that it was...maybe old Harley, so that stuck in my mind. I have been thinking it was JD.
After reading your thoughts on it not being Harley I emailed the pictures to a friend over here, who deals in British bikes.
He didnt know what it was, but said it looked 30's british and maybe Norton... but could not be sure because that is not his feild.
He suggested to find a Norton guru.

Here's a 1928-29 HD single and 750 twin front hub, brake back plate and a NOS brake drum.
750's and singles have a 6 inch brake which makes it easy to seperate it from the 6 3/4 inch big twin one.
1928 was the first year of a front wheel brake for Harley.

These photos are of a 1928 and a 1929 big twin front wheels
The main difference is in the brake plate anti rattle device that was fitted in 1929 otherwise the hubs are identical.
Steve I'd almost bet money on that hub of yours being a 1930's Velocette one. Velo stayed with a 36 spoke front wheel well into the 1950's

Simple. One hole for each spoke on the large flange and one slot for two spokes on the small flange. Not at all uncommon.

Looks Harley Hummer to me. 36 spoke. Needle bearing on the brake drum side, right? I don't think those were in use during the 20s. Your's doesn't have the speedo drive gear pressed on so it probably from a true Hummer. I think the spacer you show is part number 43746-55 ... Perry
