Harley Car??

A friend recently picked up this collection of parts of what appears to be a HD kit car of some sorts. Has anyone seen something similar to this? The motor is a 1924 JDCA with a 1915 trany. Most of the mounts for the motor, trany and front springs are cast bronze. The steering is from a model T or A. I've seen home built cycle cars but I have never seen a formal H-D based cycle car. There was an Indian based cycle car that DuPont was involved with around the 1920's. What are you friend's plans for it?

Right now he's just trying to find out more about it. He had it at Davenport this year but no one we talked to had seen anything like it.

This thing is not a cobble job. This is a purpose built vehicle and was either mass produced or the builder was an absolute genius with casting, steel stamping, welding and machining. The unit was specifically built to accept a 1915 and up HD tranny and a J type motor utilizing bronze castings. It has a chain drive differential with expanding brake and wire spoke knock-off wheels of probably 12" or 13" diameter.

I have known the owner for at least 30 years and it was found on a farm 30 or 40 miles north of Madison, Wisconsin. It might be a coincidence but that is real close to Baraboo, Wisconsin which is home to Circus World Museum and was the one time home to almost every major circus in the USA. I've wondered if possibly it could be a limited production circus clown car or something similiar.

My first in-laws lived on a farm near Baraboo and the hay wagon lying for years in the pasture turned turned out to be an old circus wagon and was donated to the museum. I always told my then father-in-law that that was no ordinary wagon and should be investigated.

That car is a really neat piece. Too bad the front axle is missing.

The engine is an OHV version of the Horizontal Opposed XA. Harley used that engine in a lot of different commercial applications.
