JDH Engine Finishes

I am curious what finishes the factory offered on 1929 JDH engines? Specifically the top end.

Mike Smith rebuilt mine many years ago and a few people have questioned his choice in finish.

Here is an original. No bright nickle plating as often seen on incorrect restorations.
