1916-22 J-Model Information

I'm looking for identification, maintenance and restoration information on the 1916 Harley. Aside from the mechanical information, I'd like to learn how to identify which parts are specific to each year, as well as the proper serial number identification.

Can anyone recommend a book(s) or web site that is devoted to this?

Thanks. I don't need any specific parts yet. I am planning to purchase a 1916-18 and would like to increase my knowlede when looking.

I want to find something with matching engine and frame, but depending on the price, I am looking from "ready to ride" to "in need of restoration". I currently have two off brand bikes but parts and documentation are very scarce. I really like that fact that the Harley has such a wide array of parts, information and people to help support it.

"Inside Harley-Davidson" by Jerry Hatfield is pretty good for technical stuff on early J bikes.

Early J manuals

1916 Parts

Spandau
A 1916 has quite a few one year only parts;
Frame (similar to a 1915 but still different), rear fender, transmission case, trans. top cover, primary chain guard, tanks, intake manifold, gearcase, and more.

It also has a few parts that are in common with 1915 models. That fact has made these parts more rare as they get eaten up by the 1915 crowd. Some of these include;
Brake pedal and side bar, clutch pedal and side bar, tool box (magneto models), shift linkage parts, rear brake backing plate, right and left engine cases (except for the stamped in numbers of course)

If you need more specific information, I would sugest the JD Yahoo forum that was in an earlier posting.
I'd also be happy to answer any specific question.
Unfortunatly, the literature that you want doesn't exist yet, but I am working on it.
