Jerry, it appears to be the later VL stand *1934-36 rear Stand. H-D added another rivet, making 3. on the 'improved' contact brackets & reinforcement sides, as opposed to the 2. rivet 1930-1933 rear stands. *The improved '34-36 stand appears to be one whole piece, as opposed to the '30-'33 two separate pieces.
*Fat Albert put the 'improved' stand to the test...and it failed! lol

Yessiree, that '31 bobber is certainly a different animal! As far as the stand goes, it sounds like you're making a...'Stand'. Haha. You'd lose a few points, but you'll have the improved rear stand.
Good Luck Peter with the rest of the build! Can't wait to see the '31 completed!

Early H-D rear stands were 7/8" 'U' channel. Did that continue into the V series rear stands? Sorry for the sidetrack but wondered if H-D continued that odd/rare channel width up to the '36EL.

I'd have to measure to be certain Eric, but I think you are correct. Up to '35VL at least. '36 was different I think.

You're correct Duffy. The 1936 V's had the one year only 1936 debut knucklehead rear stand. I've changed my past comments from 1934-36 to 1934-35 for future reference. I believe i confused the V rear stand dates with the V front stands, which are 1934-36, per Steve Slocombe's recent front V stand posting. I can't 'stand' when that happens~Haha. H-D customers must have had problems, like the picture J.Wieland posted of the tweaked 1930-33 rear stand. The 1934-35 rear stand was improved, but I imagine H-D thought it was a lot easier and cost effective to just add a welded solid bar across the strengthened new sides, and call it a day?
