  • Production Number

    Hi

Can anyone inform me what production number my harley davidson model C 1929 is.
    The engine number is 29C1101.

    Thanks

H-D generally started their numbering at 1000 or 1001. I have no idea what they did in '29 on C models, but it would make your either the 100th or 101st.

**Hello cotte, the Model C Pups were rare one-off year units, which i'm sure You realize.
Production total was *1570 for H-D 1929 Model C. So, 29C1101 was *1101 off the line of *1570 total made for 1929.

Serial numbers (SNs) for each 1929 model engine family began at 1000. I don’t have a spec sheet showing it for the C-series but the start number for the D-series (D, DL etc) is recorded below and this is from my 1911–30 Operation, Maintenance & Specs book (H-D #99405-93).

Some other 1929 model engine families are also mentioned in that book and they too have SNs beginning at 1000. I imagine the same applied to the C-series.

For 1929 The Legend Begins says 1570 Cs and 12 CMs (magneto) but that book also states that its own production figures from the beginning thru 1969 are not to be regarded as totally accurate. And I don’t see a third model mentioned even though there appears to have been a CE?

Have you checked your SN for authenticity? If you’re not sure about the characters you could post a photo. And did you check the belly numbers?

I also believe that serial numbers started at 1000, so you have an early machine. I have restored 30C1562 and 30C2177, with the lower serial number bike having the early screw-in fork bushings and the higher serial one the later 1930 plain bushings. Early 1929 bikes should have the frame and forks off the small singles, later changed, Check Johnny Sells' book on the 1929-36 45s, as the cycle parts are the same. You should have the OE-35L frame head forging number unless the frame has been changed for a later one.

Thanks for the photo. I can’t see anything wrong with the SN and all characters appear the usual factory types for a 29C.
Notice the width of the 2 and the short serif at bottom right.
That 9 is sometimes referred to as having a curved back as opposed to a round back.
Notice the C only has a serif at the top.
Notice the 1s have a top serif at about forty-five degrees as opposed to horizontal. Notice the serf across the base is fairly wide.
Notice the shape of the 0.

Here’s an example for comparison of most characters.

Hidden by the primary cover you may find casting number 2-29. There may also be a casting hallmark but I don’t know what company it represents.

How do I know what year my frame is?
Has OE-35L frame head forging number
                Best wishes
