Anybody out there know how to do a vin check on a bike with less than 17 characters? All of the online checks I have tried want the 17 characters. I only have the engine number.

For pre-1970 Harleys, where the title goes with the engine number rather than the frame, you'll find a lot of knowledge on this forum as to whether the numbers are good or bogus. That will not tell you the history of the bike or whether it has been reported stolen, and some bikes with bad numbers still have titles. For post-1970 Harley engines there are a few Websites with some info on decoding numbers. For other makes you will still find a lot of knowledge on this forum.

I just did this to get a registration. Have state DMV run number to insure no duplicate title in your state. Than have number run by local police or highway patrol. This is not always a complete check, but will at least protect you for your state. If vin comes up bad, they will confiscate your cases or bike and you will have to have proof of who you purchased from. Don't go to police or highway patrol with out good bill of sale.

I have had the numbers run by police, DMV, and insurance with it coming back clear and clean. Wondering a out how and,where to get it titled. There has to be a way. I have looked at some of these online companies who sah they can do that but tbd reviews i have,read on them suggest scam.

Just talk to your state DMV. Almost every state has a procedure for acquiring a title for older vehicles with no papers. Usually involving a security bond of some sort.

Do a Lien Sale for storage fees. Ask a local police impound who does their lien sales for them. In the Los Angeles area I use Grant Lien Sales. They charge me 70 bucks and do everything necessary for the sale.
