  • Need Help in ID of 1915 Barn Find

    Hi Folks,

I was sent a couple of barn find pictures recently and was hoping for some help in giving a correct ID on this bike. There was an old advertising slip with the bike that mention model 11J but I think it's more likely an 11F judging by the magneto and acetylene headlamp. I apologize for the bad quality but this is what the guy sent...obviously missing some parts but most of the essentials look like they are there.

Any info that you guys can provide as to model, what it is missing and any mismatched parts that you can identify, I would be most grateful.

    TIA and Happy 2015!

I hear you Cotten and thanks for the welcome. I'm a semi pro photographer so you better believe if I can get in to actually see this thing I will be taking many high quality photos.

Oh, not a chance! If I'm lucky enough to land it I would try to find the missing parts and get the motor done but that would be it. I wouldn't dream of touching that finish.

No guesses as to the model though? I'm pretty sure it's a 1915 but I'm looking for confirmation...I'm trying to figure out what it is exactly so I can determine a fair price offer for it. Based on what I see here I'm thinking the $15-20k range but I want to be fair with these folks.

Yes. It's a 1915 magneto model. I see 4 digits in the VIN and a K at the end. If there was an L in front of the VIN it would be a generator model. Looks pretty complete and correct. Looks like there may be a fist sized hole towards the front of the left tank. No worries there, it can be repaired. I think that you are in the correct ballpark with $15k to $20k.
VERY nice find. 1915's like that are few and far between anymore.

Thanks for the clarification Mark. Glad to hear I'm on the right track with my research. One thing that has me a little confused though is the primary cover...every picture I can find of the '15 shows a raised concentric circle or doughnut shape towards the rear behind the pedal crank and this one looks different. Hence, I was thinking there might be mismatched parts on this one.

Also, on the third picture, above the footboard, there is a round object that appears to be attached...a horn?

Looks like the end of the muffler of the little bike next to it...

Oh OK, that makes much more sense as I thought it would be a very strange placement for a horn. I wish the guy would get back to me so I can get in to see the thing and take some proper photos. The guessing game is killing me. It's almost as bad as a high school date that's getting hot and heavy with little hope of consummation.

It's just a later style primary cover. Quality reproductions are available. The toolbox under the seat is missing too, but that's no big deal either.
