  • 8 valve Harleys at the Leadfoot

These two 8 valves appeared at the Leadfoot Festival a fortnight ago
One is 99.9% original and the other one is 100% replica.
See if you can pick the genuine one from the replica.
Theres a couple of photos of the jigs, dies, tooling, etc that is needed to produce the replicas.

A very good friend of mine who wants to remain anonymous until he finishes the bikes he's been commissioned to build.
When they're done he'll be making all the bits you see for the general market.
He's a perfectionist and insists everything he makes should be indistinguishable from the original factory parts.
Those rigid fork legs he's making are absolutely beautiful and a real credit to him.
You can't tell the repo valve rocker arms from the originals, they're that good.
I think there is one complete replica 8 valve still available if anybody is interested.

            Rob thats the repo
As you look at them the one on the right with the half tank is the genuine one.

Peculiar, never seen this before: The green-rimmed bikes cyls have a "horizontal" bolt about 2 1/2" long near the cyl base, like a pinch bolt on a circular clamp. A closer detail would reveal more. Is this some sort of re-inforcement after "porting"? btw, when did engineers last port the cyls near the bases?

that's an oil band. you run an oil line to it giving the front cylinder a little oil. these holes may show up in the photo

Thanks rwm for the tech info on that "bolt". Oil line, okay. And the bike on the right with the light blue tank has none, which makes it replica?
Now Eric, if dumb questions are legal, wth is a "C port cylinder"? thx for your patience.
While we're on porting I'll ask again for more discussion on that subject. Seems to me porting was a positive science for only a few years, and I think I read that in Sucher's Redskin. And I remember watching a you-tube of a ported Excelsior running and revving. .. made me salivate!
