  • Transmition gear adjuster

My JD transmition kicker keeps getting stuck as I am told is in typical fashion, and as such a "gear adjuster" was installed. I have one but do not understand how to use it. Do you push it in and turn it, hit it with a hammer, what? Dosn't seem to do anything either way and have to put a wrench on the drive gear to free it.

Push it all the way down slowly and firmly and release it slowly to. Do this a couple of times and that should put the kicker gear on the mainshaft into a position where it will mesh with the kicker quadrant gear on the kicker lever. If it's not working, then either something is sticking or the gear(s) could be shot.

Part number is 2134-16 and was used to unjam the Harley starter gears prior to 1931 when the constant mesh starter was introduced. All you have inside is a tapered pin and a return spring, and the pin is driven between the kick starter quadrant gear and the mainshaft starter gear to unjam them. Both these gears will be pretty rough on a used bike.
