  • Oiling System 1928 JD

How does it work when it’s working correctly? I was told that if it is set up correctly you shouldn’t have to pump it to give it extra oil. The 1929 HD owners manual says: “ When running at high speed for a long distance , it is advisable to give it a 1/2 pumpful every two miles"

Dear Steve, the VL Riders Handbook says the same, but I use the hand pump only for putting in fresh oil after draining the engine cases. Overuse of the hand pump just fills up the cases and/or oil ends up all over the bike. You'll find that you will drain the cases more frequently than advised in the handbook, in order to check the oil pump is working correctly. 1928 is the first year for the throttle controlled oil pump, with a chain oiler bleed added in 1930. Key starting point is to have the oilpump wide open with the throttle wide open.
