  • 1940 WLDR information needed

    Hello motorcycle friends,

I am a new member of the AMCA European Chapter and also new in this forum.

For a correct restoration I am looking for original 1940ies pictures or even HD factory-pictures of the 1940 WLDR model.

I would appreciate a lot if you could help me with some scans or information on where to find good pictures and information on this model.

I know and can recommand Eric Mathieu´s website http://www.beautyofspeed.com/ , but could not find much other useful information in the web.

    Best wishes from Austria,

Prior to the 1941 WR, the 45 WLDR's did not look like a racer when they left the factory. The 1940 WLDR would have looked just like a standard 1940 WL as it left the factory with the exeption of the large fin cylinders and larger manifold. You can get a copy of Bruce Palmer's "How to Restore Your Harley Davidson" and it will provide most of the details you'll need. If you want to restore it like to restore it to race condition, it gets more challenging. Harley won the Daytona race in 1940. Good chance you could find a picture in the March Enthusiast of that year. Dale Walksler at Wheels Thru Time Museum has an extensive racing collection of that period. You might be able to get a copy of a picture from him.

    good luck

        Dear Chris,

        Thank you for your information.

I have one picture of Dale´s 1940 WLDR and this bike looks very much like I would like to build my bike. Following the information I found on http://www.beautyofspeed.com/ and to what I was told by friends who own a couple of WLDRs and WRs the 1940 WLDR is already a WR type engine but was called WR from 1941 on. 1940 was the only year the WLDR had the WR type cylinders and cams as far as I am informed, so building a racer would be suitable I guess?

If anyone has old pictures of 1940 racers I would still be interested....

        Best wishes,
        Florian

Thank you for this good 1941 picture. I found out some more details in the meantime and bought the NOS 1940 2-bolt frame which was offered e-b lately.

I still need a couple of parts like:

            - orig. 6" airfilter
            - orig. ride control
            - handlebars

so if somethings turns up, please let me know!

            THANK YOU!

            Best regards,
            gsottl
