I am in the process of (re)constructing the 1940 UL with water cooled Colt machine gun as depicted in David Sarafans book "The Liberator", pg. 63.
I had the good fortune of finding most of the original armor plating for this prototype many years ago. In the interim I have purchased a 1940 UL with package truck as well as the 1928 water cooled Colt machine gun. David was kind enough to loan me the photos he used in his book so I can accurately reproduce the rest of the machine. While I am sure I will need some more assistance along the way, I could use some help on a few things near term. They are as follows:
1.- Does anyone know if another one of these exists anywhere? Sometimes it's easier to copy something rather than re-invent it.
2.Obviously the photos are in black and white which makes it difficult to determine what color the 1940UL civilian bike is that was used as the platform for this rig. Given that is a medium-light color with dark striping in the photographs, and knowing the color options for 1940, I can only assume it was squadron gray or police silver.Can someone provide me with more than an educated guess, or at least better than my guess?
3. While we are on the topic of color , the package truck in picture"A" appears to be a lighter color than the tank on the bike. Could it be that the armor plate and package body may have been done in an olive for HD's pitch to the Army?
4. I do not have all the wind screen armor. Does anyone have that hanging in their garage? I can accurately reproduce it from my photos but you just cant beat original.
5. The last item for this discussion is the seat in the package truck. It does say "MILSCO" on it so at least we know it was done with the rest of the HD leather. The seat pan itself appears to be a tractor seat with a back on it (which they made). Anyone out there have a source for one. Its the only big ticket item missing beside the steel windscreen.
