  • VL Tranny Pull

Any secrets I need to know to pull tranny out of my '35 VL? Do I need any special tools? Clutch hub any problem to pull? Never removed it and going to jump on it tonight and just thought I'd ask the experts. Thanks.

You don't need to take the clutch off to remove it. Just remove the motor sprocket and remove the clutch, parimary intact.

I believe third gear is my problem so might as well pull it all apart and inspect clutch plates.

Dear Louie, the gearbox X-tool 12017-X is handy in removing the lock ring nut and ball bearing holder on 1916-36 transmissions. The clutch removal tool 12022-30 is great at removing the clutch, as it pulls from the centre and does not risk distorting the clutch drum like a big puller on the outside. However, it's expensive enough that you need to remove a few clutches to get the benefit. A small puller is also handy for the starter gears, but the whole transmission can be stripped without special tools if needed.

Thanks all, I got it all apart, only had trouble with the clutch hub. Now the fun of rebuilding!
