Never silver that I have heard of. Up into '26 they were painted Olive.

I have not seen original silver painted engine or transmission cases on the 1930-36 VLs. It is possible the gearbox top lids and side covers were silver painted instead of cadmium plated, but the aluminum is nearly always bare, except early 1930 when the gearbox case might be olive green.

Part of lots of guys spring spruce up routine was to paint the cases and such with aluminum paint, it was easier then cleaning them and made em look almost new.
