  • Metal Fuel Lines vs. Rubber

For whatever reason, I have now replaced the metal fuel line in the last 2 years due to leaks where the fuel line connects to the tank. I have looked for burrs on the fitting but I don’t see anything that can cause the line to get a hairline crack where it goes into the fitting. The engine mounts are tight, the carb is tight (including the little support attached to the fuel bowl) and the tanks are tight.

Since this has happened twice I am contemplating replacing the metal fuel line with rubber fuel line (or whatever flexible fuel line material they use today). My question is, why do the metal fuel lines have a loop in them? Is it to absorb vibration or prevent an air lock?

The loop is to absorb vibration.

if your lines are home made you may only be using single flare try using double flare on the ends the way the die is made it cause a pinch in the tube you must then turn tube 90 degrees and flare again i had repop lines on my 45 they cracked made my own used a double flare tool (30$ at home depot) lines have not cracked yet

A double flare is when the end of the line is doubled in the flare seating area. It takes a special double flaring tool to do this.
