Aside from pulling the cam cover to retime the breather valve on the scavenger pump body, is there a way to clean the screen easily?

Short answer is no, anytime you pull the return pump you need to check the timing. If you are anal enough you can pull the outer cover, mark the location of the gear and body, slide the pump out, clean the screen, re-gasket, slide it back in, check your marks carefully and put the cover back on. Fussy and not foolproof. By the way, why do you feel you need to clean it? If there is enough in there to be a problem you probably need to tear down anyway. The screen is only to keep chunks from tearing up the pump, it is not a filter.
Good luck
