  • HD 45" rear speedo drive gear install

Years ago I bought the driven gear from Napierala Speedos. The gears he sold were made of fiber, maybe phenolic. I remember him telling me to do a light press, as too much would split the gear, and then drill and tap the shaft for a button head screw to hold the gear on. Does anyone have experience with pressing his gears on with the correct amount of interference fit on the shaft spline? The ID of his gear measures .186, my shaft under the spline measures .188, the OD of the spline measures .200. I would like the spline to somewhat cut itself into the gear to prevent rotational slippage, but I also do not want to split the gear with too much interference. Any experience with the proper fit? As is, that would be about .007/ side to form to the inside of the gear. My thought would be about 1/2 that. I definitely will open his gear up to at least my shaft minor OD of .188. He has passed, so I can't ask him. Thanks for any help. 20260214_135126.jpg 20260214_135134.jpg
