  • Not in VL Parts Book

This posting is mainly for Steve Slocombe or anyone else who knows the answer. Often times in his books he has the abbreviation of 'nipb', short for Not In Parts Book. Steve shows the part 4526-26, a brass flat tension spring under the VL dash cover, in his VL books. I've looked in every Harley Spare Parts Catalogs from 1926 to 1941 and cannot find the part. Help Steve (or anyone else) please. I'd like to know for an upcoming book project.

Certain pieces were never sold as repair parts as they were assembled when new by the factory and there was no need seen for a dealer or owner repair in the future. They weren't looking 100 years down the road...

Dear Lippy, I used the 1930-40 Harley parts book when compiling the VL parts list/price guide. I must have invented plausible part numbers for items not listed in the parts book, particularly as I was reproducing some of them at the time. Note that the ignition switch metal label, and the light switch metal label, plus their rivets, as well as the switch guide plate you showed, are not listed separately in that parts book. This would agree with Rubone's observation that the dash covers were probably sold as complete items, with the individual components not intended to be available as spare parts at the time.
