  • VL Foot Clutch Lever Setup

Where do I start? I believe my 1934 has been upgraded to the 1936 setup.
I have a friction disc between the foot lever friction disc and the foot clutch lever.
Thanks to Steve Slocombe we have a picture of Rikuo which shows no friction disc and two 0129 nuts.
My parts book doesn't show a friction disc and only one 0129 nut for my 1934.
Another upgrade on mine I believe was a 0142 and a 0129 nut was used. 1936 upgrade perhaps.
Question; did they have a friction disc in the 1934 setup and secondly, should we use one now if not used back then?
Is the double nut setup acceptable for judging or do they even care about something that trivial?
Point of interest: My setup has a friction disc pin and my friend has a screw holding his disc in place. Another upgrade I assume.

So far from what I can find is Harley never used a fiber material prior to 1936 so no friction disc was used. Brass against steel was used.

I think Steve recommended using a fiber disc from the steering damper a while back when someone asked a similar question.

Dear John, that part takes a lot of use, and a 90 year old bike might carry a lot of repairs.I don't think the pre-1936 set-up had a friction washer, although I've seen pieces of leather and myself fitted a steering damper friction washer on occasion. The pin wears and can be replaced with a screw or rivet, but this is a repair rather than an upgrade. The 1936 pedal is one-year-only and takes the larger 0142 nut and two star washers to fix the pedal. The two 0129 nuts on the earlier set-up is correct, and those pesky judges might deduct if they see only one.

LOL, Thanks Steve. Glad you're watching out for us. Cheers
