VL Transmission Lube suggestions

Looking for suggestions for gear lube for my newly rebuilt 3 speed tranny.
Is EP 90 still the way to go or do you have any other suggestions for me?

I've been using 90 wt. gear oil in my '34 VLD for years , with no problem . Good luck !

Me too! I've only ever used 90Wt gear oil in my VLs.

The original VL gearbox oil was the same as engine oil, say straight 50 weight, but a lot of us use EP90 or EP 80/90 gear oil today.

You're right Steve, in those days all motorcycles had the same oil in the gearbox and engine.Especially since the VL gearbox is very primitive and any oil is enough.

Hey Jarek, you're talking about the bikes that I love! All credit to William S Harley, and that three speed lasted 1915-36 while the four speed went 1936-85. They made all the parts in-house and sure knew how to design a strong and long lasting gearbox.

It's great that you love this motorcycle brand despite having many other motorcycles in your area, but this gearbox has minimal requirements when it comes to oil. Whatever you put in there will be sufficient. It’s very simple, with its own pros and cons. Primitive—it relates to the era when everything was just being developed. There is only one sliding element, so you can’t really talk about complicated technology.
