  • VL gas cap venting

I have reason to believe my caps are not venting correctly. Is it just me or would the vent at the top of the cap be sealed against the gas tank? Would the clearance from gas cap washers help this?

Up to about 1930 the gas caps were vented through the top and a leather washer was fitted underneath, between the cap and the tank filler. After that, presumably to stop rain causing pitting corrosion in the tank bottoms, the caps were vented from the side and the leather washers not used. You have the 1935/36 gas caps with the larger diameter and the side vents. Don't use the leather washers, check the cap vent holes are not blocked, and don't screw the caps so far down as to block the side vent.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Steve. I’ve had the caps screwed all the way down tight.
