  • Spark plug recommendations 1932 VL

    Hi Everyone,

Just seeking some recommendations for new spark plugs. So far in my research I've found that Champion D16s are in one tuneup kit I've found online. Not sure if this is the best one though. A cross reference page online lists 152 possible replacements. Too daunting to go through one-by-one.

    Best regards,
    Loch

    Loch,

For what it's worth I've been running Champion D 14 plugs in my 24 Big Chief for decades. D 16 is bit hotter plug I believe if you need one. I'm also running a Linkert M-21 carb, which was originally spec'd for the early VL. This combo has been bulletproof for me. In essence, the early Chief is very similar to your VL, a 74" flathead with total loss oiling. I'd start with either D 14 or 16 plugs and see how it runs. Check them often for signs of burning oil and correct carb mixture.

There may be more good plugs than bad plugs, Loch,...

But avoid modern NGK A-6 because they are now resistors, no matter what they tell you on the phone.

Good vintage ones had a knurl on the base:

Please put a ohmmeter on whatever you choose (unless you've installed a flying saucer ignition, I guess.)

PS: What's a box of ten 7/8"-18 Autolite TT8 plugs worth?
        See everybody at D-port!

In my copy of Steve’s book chapter 26 running in under carburation “ the front plug tends to run gray to brown and the rears blown to black “ I was concerned about this until I saw that sentence from time to time I will sw itch the plugs around and the back plug will clean up . D16’ s work well.

                WooWoo!

I was goin' four bucks a piece maybe, or free, if you buy a pair of my PEEK 7/8" crush washers at eight bucks each. I don't even know what the TT8 was made for.

For anyone with a lathe, I shall have economical PEEK scraps at D-port, and you can cut all sorts of useful stuff.
