  • 45 Crankcase Sealant

Manuals specify shellac, found mine to be sealed with black RTV. What is the best sealant for the crankcase halves today?

Yamabond, Hondabond, basically any good hylomar non-hardening sealant. And NOT RTV.

      3M 'Scotch-Seal' 800 Industrial Sealant, Rex!

I believe it has an -80 OEM number.

(But I 'spose I should have searched it to see if it is still produced; I'm down to two tubes.)

PS: I had Yamabond4 fail for me. But it was an OHV with a leaky petcock.

Seems like I bought a tube of hylomar at NAPA for the Buell several years ago, but it isn't listed now.

          Looks like it's still around.

If you do not want to go in a Honda or Yamaha shop, you can get the same thing at an auto supply, Permatex Moto Seal.
