I'm replacing the intake manifold brass rings on my 30 VL to fix a massive air leak. Was wonderimg what is the correct orientation of the ring. Does the beveled end go towards the cylinder nipple? Should the ring be pushed onto the manifold end and then pressure of tightening the nut will seal it?

The bevel mates to the bevel inside the nut, OWG...
The flat face of the seal butts flat against the inlet nipple.
Please inspect the inlet nipple for blemishes that may need to be dressed, and the manifold spigots for blemishes and distortions.
Beware also that the bevels must match, as modern productions vary widely.
