  • Rebuilt VLD just fired up - oil leak at timing cover

FINALLY got time to finish the 36 VLD, put in gas and oil and swat the lever. Started on the second kick! It also has a healthy oil leak on the timing cover, please see the arrow on the photo.
The bottom end was rebuilt by someone else, so I'm not familiar with what's going on here. This looks like an oil passage and should have a plug in it, but I find no reference to this in the parts manual or Steve's book.
If this gets a bolt to plug it, can someone provide the part number?
    TIA

It appears to be a 1/4-20 set screw length .257 20 pitch thread .250 O.D.

        Steve,

A photo would certainly be helpful!

Steve Slocumb's book on page 7-6 has a fastener table, listing part number "645-30 Gear stud hole plug 1/4-20"

Since it's a set screw, is the tip holding something in place, like a plug?

        I appreciate the response!

And here's what I found in the parts manual - a photo. Also found a 1/4-20 screw in my stash that's too long and has the wrong head, but with some mods it will work until I find the real thing.

I took a picture of the cover and screw but it will not upload, I have tried several times today and have posted pics before. The cover I pulled it from is off the bike and has no head like a set screw.
I can look at the one on the bike with a mirror and it is the same it sets recessed in the hole and has a slot for a screwdriver I do not see it holds anything. I can send it to you ( the screw ) if it will help, maybe Steve will chime in tomorrow

The 645-30 is a blanking plug for early magneto models. Your missing item is a factory blanking plug or set screw as Steve said earlier, so not in the parts books or nipb.
