Definitely buy his restoration manual and the list of parts he has for sale.
Also check out Harbor Vintage Motor Co. at http://harborvintage.com/. They specialize in VL's also, sell hundreds of parts and are very knowledgeable.
Then have him contact Lonnie at Antique Cycle Supply at (616) 636-4028 for a set of factory photos.
Between the three of them, your friend should be set. -
I found a VL that I was considering adding to the stable. I emailed L&R & rear photos to the aforementioned powers that be. The guys were all very cool and gave me a quick break down (over phone) on what was missing, incorrect, correct, what to look for. Approx market value based on assessment. It was really helpful.
